A Bad Plan By Robert Nemanich
To sum up what Wisconsin's own state scientists, economists, and accountants stated in the Final
Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) which only confirmed what many of us who are characterized as "the
opponents" knew all along; that the "Power the Future" (PTF) proposed by We Energies is simply a bad plan.
Even last Wednesday a hesitant Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial concurred with those findings and is now
calling on We Energies to withdraw its plan, a stunning reversal! If you had not received a copy of the FEIS you
can access it at: http://psc.wi.gov/electric/cases/ptfelmrd/ind-ptfelm.htm
Summarizing:
The third plant proposed by WE Energies is not cost-effective in anyway. This is important since that was where
We Energies purported to get all their emission gains.
The proposed building of the two coal-burning plants was considered not least cost effective. If the Calpine
facility is built then no additional generating facility is needed until 2011, if not later! For those individuals,
businesses or organizations that are solely concerned to rate issues this ends the debate, the PTF plan is bad
for ratepayers.
But the report goes further as regards to emissions; (a hidden enormous cost) where they also favor Calpine
where again it is a no contest. Coincidentally they further state that if an aggressive wind development
program was implemented that this would meet all the future demands for energy.
This should send a powerful message to our local politicians and business leaders to now come forward and join
in openly opposing this proposal in front of the PSC.
