Reading list:

The following list of books cover a variety of social and environmental issues. They should all be available through your local book store, but may have to be ordered.

More books will be added to the list periodically. If anyone has any other books they would like listed, please send your suggestions to the webmaster.

The Ralph Nader Reader by Ralph Nader, published by Seven Stories Press
This is a collection of the writing of Ralph Nader with topics ranging from auto safety in the 1960s to opposition to the WTO.

Against All Odds - The Green Transformation of American Politics by John Rensenbrink, published by Leopold Press
This is a discussion of the development of the Green Party in the United States. Forward is by Ralph Nader.

All Our Relations by Winona LaDuke, published by South End Press
This is a thoughtful and in-depth account of Native resistance to environmental and cultural degradation.

Nonviolent Social Movements - A Geographical Perspective edited by Stephen Zunes and others, published by Blackwell Publishers
Much of history is taught as a history of the wars fought during various time periods. This book is a history of the nonviolent social movements around the world and how nonviolent action has emerged as a key element of political change. A must read.

A Call to Conscience - The landmark speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. edited by Clayborne Carson and Kris Shepard. This inspiring collection contains the timeless speeches of one of the greatest orators of the 20th century. Introductions to various speeches are by such respected activists and leaders such as Rosa Parks and the Dalai Lama. This is an important and powerful book.

Island - by Aldous Huxley - this is an imaginary account of a culture that thrives on a secluded island. the founders of the community were a combination of both western science and buddhist ethics. in this book lies incredibly logical methods of education, government, balance with nature- all inside a storyline.

Profit over people: neoliberalism and global order - by Noam Chomsky - a very interesting look into the ways of governments and the corporations that fund them.

The Chippewa Treaty Rights Story - by Rick Whaley and Walt Bresette (Tongues of Green Fire Press Writers. Publishing Cooperative, ISBN 1-930149-00-X). Orders: 1-888-874-6904.

It's the Media, Stupid - by John Nichols and Robert W. McChesney. This book shows how we can reclaim the media for the people. It can be ordered from the Progressive magazine by calling 608-257-4626.

The Case for Animal Rights by Tom Regan, published by University of California Press
This is an excellent overview of animal rights and why it is a social, environmental, and ethical issue that affects all of us.

The Dreaded Comparison by Marjorie Spiegel, published by Mirror Books
This is a short but important and honest book which explores the similarities between the violence humans have wrought against other humans , and our culture's treatment of non-human species. Library Journal has said "This book belongs in all libraries".

The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture (1977) Berry, Wendell,
and The Gift of Good Land (1981).

How Can One Sell the Air? Chief Seattle's Vision, Chief Seathl (Seattle), (The Book Publishing Co., Summertown, TN, 1992). This has Dr. Henry Smith's 1887 version of Chief Seattle's 1854 speech; the famous Ted Perry 1970s adaptation "How can one buy or sell the air;" and the 1969 William Arrowsmith version
